Description

What can trial lawyers learn from musicians about persuasion, credibility, and human connection? Drawing on more than two decades of legal practice and a lifetime of musical performance, this unique CLE explores the surprising parallels between the courtroom and the bandstand. While lawyers and musicians work in different arenas, both must earn attention, establish trust, communicate under pressure, and guide audiences through complex stories.

Using lessons from jazz performance and trial advocacy, participants will examine how listening, timing, improvisation, presence, collaboration, and authenticity influence persuasive effectiveness. Through practical examples and real-world applications, attendees will learn techniques that can strengthen witness examinations, opening statements, closing arguments, negotiations, and client relationships.

Structured as a seven-movement jazz composition, the program offers a fresh perspective on advocacy while providing concrete tools that lawyers can immediately incorporate into their practice.

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:
  • Apply active listening techniques to improve communication with clients, witnesses, jurors, and colleagues
  • Use rhythm, pacing, and strategic silence to enhance persuasive advocacy
  • Develop greater adaptability when responding to unexpected developments during trial and negotiation
  • Strengthen courtroom presence through attention, authenticity, and emotional regulation
  • Improve collaboration and leadership within trial teams
  • Recognize how vulnerability and credibility contribute to trust and persuasive impact

Whether you are a seasoned litigator or a newer practitioner, this program offers practical insights into one of advocacy’s most overlooked truths: before people can be persuaded, they must first feel heard.

Lecturer Bio

Billie Eidson, Esq.

Billie Eidson is a trial lawyer, educator, and jazz vocalist whose career has been defined by the art of listening, persuasion, and human connection.

Admitted to practice law in Oregon since 2001, Billie has served as an Assistant Attorney General with the Oregon Department of Justice and has represented individuals in complex civil rights and medical malpractice matters. Her legal career spans government service, nonprofit leadership, teaching, and private practice, providing her with a broad perspective on advocacy in both the courtroom and the community.

Before entering the legal profession, Billie taught high school students, an experience that deepened her understanding of communication, learning, and the power of storytelling. Those themes continue to inform her work as a lawyer and speaker.

In addition to her legal career, Billie is an accomplished jazz vocalist, recording artist, and bandleader. She performs throughout the Pacific Northwest and is the creator of Moon and Sand: Songs of Love and Illusion, an ongoing recording and performance project exploring the intersection of story, emotion, and human experience through music. Her work has been praised for its depth, authenticity, and emotional intelligence.

Billie’s CLE presentations draw upon more than two decades of legal practice and a lifetime of musical performance to explore how listening, presence, timing, improvisation, and authentic communication can strengthen advocacy. Her unique perspective helps lawyers develop practical skills that enhance courtroom effectiveness, client relationships, and professional fulfillment.

She is the presenter of In the Key of Justice: What Musicians Can Teach Trial Lawyers, a program examining the surprising parallels between musical performance and trial advocacy.
