Description

This CLE program provides a practical, litigation-focused overview of medical malpractice cases from both plaintiff and defense perspectives, with an emphasis on building and challenging claims through records, standards of care, and expert testimony.

Attendees will learn how to effectively request and analyze medical records, including electronically stored information (ESI) and EMR audit trails, to uncover critical metadata and case-defining facts.

The program then explores the evolving legal framework governing the standard of care, including guidance from the Restatement (Third) of Torts and the role of clinical guidelines, as well as strategies for proving or disproving causation in alleged deviations leading to injury. Finally, the session covers best practices for identifying, retaining, working with, and deposing expert witnesses, offering practical tools for strengthening case theory and trial presentation in medical malpractice litigation.

Katie's experience spans both the courtroom and the negotiating table. In the aftermath of Hurricane Ida, she successfully mediated numerous property damage claims against insurance companies. Her predominant practice is in medical malpractice, where her personal experience navigating the healthcare system informs how she advocates for her clients. She has handled a wide range of cases, contributing to several seven-figure recoveries in cases involving complex birth injuries and delayed treatment of infections. She also served as co-lead counsel in obtaining a favorable jury verdict in a cardiac malpractice case.

Katie has been recognized by her peers through selection to Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch 2026 in three areas — Personal Injury – Plaintiff, Medical Malpractice – Plaintiff, and Medical Malpractice – Defendants — and as a Super Lawyers Rising Star 2025-2026 in Medical Malpractice and Personal Injury.

Before joining The Bowling Law Firm in January 2023, Katie served as a law clerk to the Honorable Judge Donald "Chick" L. Foret in the 24th Judicial District Court of Jefferson Parish and previously as a judicial intern to the Honorable Fredericka H. Wicker at the Louisiana Fifth Circuit Court of Appeal.

Katie earned her law degree from Loyola University College of Law, where she was a Dean's Scholarship recipient and a member of Loyola's Moot Court and Trial Advocacy programs – winning the 2019 Best Brief Award and Best Opening Statement at the 2019 Trial Advocacy Intramural Competition. She holds a certificate in common law alongside her civil law specialization. Before law school, Katie worked in a corporate legal role in Austin, Texas, and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Texas at Austin, where she competed on the Texas Rowing Team and volunteered with East Austin Young Life.
