This CLE course provides a comprehensive overview of the probate process and the legal handling of a decedent’s estate. Attendees will learn how to open an estate, navigate disputes, and close proceedings efficiently. The course also includes strategies for avoiding probate altogether, including use of small estate affidavits and trust administration.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Navigate the administration process, including notifying heirs and creditors
  • Manage claims, handle disputes, and avoid common pitfalls
  • Close an estate and file the necessary paperwork
  • Leverage tools to avoid probate, including small estate affidavits and trusts
  • By the end of the session, participants will understand the full lifecycle of probate and gain practical tips for minimizing complications and maximizing efficiency.

Katrice Matthews, Esq.

Katrice Matthews, Esquire Katrice Matthews is an Illinois-licensed attorney with over a decade of experience in real estate, estate planning, probate, and general civil litigation. Practicing since 2010, she has successfully tried dozens of cases before judges and juries in Cook and Will counties. Attorney Matthews is known for her ability to break down legal complexities and empower clients through education. A proud Virgo and natural task manager, she takes a perfectionist's pride in delivering thorough, client-centered legal services.

She is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis and Chicago-Kent College of Law, and is the founding attorney of Sable Law Group, LLC, based in Chicago, Illinois. In addition to her legal work, Attorney Matthews is a wife, a mother, and a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
