Attorneys today face increasing pressure to market their practices effectively while staying within the bounds of professional responsibility. This CLE program provides a comprehensive review of the ethical framework governing attorney advertising and client communications, with practical guidance on how to promote your practice without running afoul of the rules.

Participants will examine the requirements of Rules 7.1–7.5, as well as Rules 5.7 and 5.8, and consider how proposed amendments may impact future marketing strategies. The program then explores common and emerging forms of legal marketing—from traditional advertising and newsletters to digital platforms, websites, SEO, and social media—highlighting both opportunities and risks. Practical techniques for ethically leveraging earned media, content writing, and marketing materials will also be discussed.

The session concludes with a review of recent disciplinary decisions to illustrate how the rules are being applied in practice, followed by an open Q&A

Lecturer Bios

John Charles Zaher, Esq.

John Charles Zaher (John C. Zaher) is the founder of an award-winning communications firm and is a licensed attorney, who has earned several higher education degrees. With extensive experience in political and community affairs, his professional background extends from the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, the Nassau County Executive’s Office and the 1992 and 1994 campaigns for Rick Lazio to community affairs and government relations in the cable television industry, as well as teaching political science, history and business law at local colleges. He has written several published articles focused on local politics and public policy and won several communications awards.

He serves as CEO of The Public Relations and Marketing Group, LLC and its corporate divisions, which provide services to corporations, law firms, government entities, professional service businesses and political candidates, among other industries.

Outside his professional life, John is the proud father of two girls. In his free time, he enjoys playing, coaching and watching his girls play sports. He also enjoys playing golf, skiing, running, hiking, biking, swimming, and other outdoor activities. When it comes time to relax, you’ll find him reading about U.S. history, watching documentaries and comedies. He also enjoys going to live concerts, theatrical performances and comedy shows. Taking long rides and exploring new places is also high on his list of his leisure activities.
