Description

This CLE program offers a practical overview of special education law for attorneys seeking to understand how schools and families navigate the rights of students with disabilities. The course will examine the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, highlighting their key distinctions and how they shape obligations to provide a free appropriate public education (FAPE).

Topics include referrals, evaluations, eligibility, least restrictive environment (LRE), Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), dispute resolution, and the role of families in the process. The program will conclude with a discussion of potential impacts on special education services if federal education funding is reduced.

Lecturer Bio

Sharyn Gallatin, Esq.

Sharyn J. Gallatin, Esq. has been practicing law since 2000 after completing a judicial clerkship for the Honorable Peter F. Boggia, J.S.C. in the Civil Division of the Superior Court of New Jersey. She began her law career as an insurance defense litigator in downtown Manhattan but opened her own practice in 2002 specializing in residential real estate and estate planning. After her son was diagnosed with autism, she soon turned her focus to special education law, helping advocate for children and families to ensure that no child was deprived of vital services to ensure that he or she received a free and appropriate public education. She is well versed in the IDEA, Section 504 and Title II of the ADA. She holds a JD from Fordham University School of Law and has practiced law in New Jersey, New York and Michigan.

Sharyn is a member of the Council of Parent and Attorney Advocates (“COPAA”), and has presented at several events in New Jersey and Michigan including “How to Plan for an IEP Meeting,” and “Thoughts from a Parent of a Special Needs Child and His Attorney.” She is dedicated to volunteer service, currently serving on the Board of Directors of Matan, an organization committed to disability inclusion in the Jewish community, and has also held numerous volunteer board positions for such organizations as Jewish Federations in New Jersey, New York and Michigan, several women’s advocacy organizations, and the Detroit Children’s Choir. In the early 2000s, she created the Jewish Council for Special Needs for the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey to ensure that all organizations in the special needs space were working together to deliver services to the special needs community in the most optimal fashion.
